PCD Turning Inserts – Overview

???? What Are PCD Turning Inserts?

PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) turning inserts are cutting tools used for high-precision turning operations on non-ferrous and abrasive materials. The cutting edge is made of synthetic diamond, offering exceptional wear resistance, thermal conductivity, and excellent surface finish.

???? Key Features:

Feature

Description

Material

PCD tip brazed onto carbide substrate

Insert Types

ISO shapes (e.g. CCGT, DCGT, VCGT, TCGT), full face or tipped

Cutting Edge

Sharp or honed (depending on application)

Edge Radius

0.2 mm to 1.5 mm typical

Application

Finishing and semi-finishing of non-ferrous and abrasive materials

Coolant Use

Often dry, MQL, or air blast

???? Applications of PCD Turning Inserts

PCD inserts are ideal for machining:

  • Aluminum alloys (especially high-Si content)
  • Copper, brass, bronze
  • Magnesium
  • Composites (CFRP, GFRP)
  • Plastics and thermosets
  • Graphite and ceramics (non-ferrous)

⚠️ Do not use on steel or iron – diamond reacts with iron at high temperatures, causing rapid tool wear.

❓ PCD Turning Inserts – FAQ (Top 10 Questions)

1. What are the advantages of PCD turning inserts?

  • Extremely high wear resistance
  • Superior surface finish
  • Long tool life (up to 100x longer than carbide)
  • Reduces downtime and tooling costs

2. Can I use PCD inserts on steel?

No. PCD reacts with ferrous materials, leading to tool failure. For steel, use CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) inserts.

3. What are typical cutting speeds for PCD inserts?

  • Aluminum: 800–3000 m/min
  • Composites: 200–600 m/min
  • Plastics: 100–400 m/min
(Feeds and depths depend on finish and tool rigidity.)

4. Are PCD inserts indexable?

Yes. Most are ISO-standard indexable inserts with 1 to 3 usable cutting edges (depending on insert design).

5. What are common PCD insert shapes?

  • CCGT / CNGA – 80° diamond
  • DCGT / DNGA – 55° diamond
  • VCGT / VNGA – 35° diamond
  • TCGT / TNGA – triangle shapes

6. Are PCD inserts coated?

No. The diamond cutting surface does not require coatings; it naturally offers extremely low friction and high hardness.

7. Do I need coolant with PCD inserts?

Not always. Dry cutting or MQL is preferred. Coolant may be used for heat-sensitive plastics or tight-tolerance applications.

8. Can PCD inserts be re-sharpened?

Yes, but only by specialist grinding or laser services. Not every PCD insert is worth resharpening due to cost.

9. What industries use PCD turning inserts?

  • Automotive (aluminum engine parts, transmission housings)
  • Aerospace (composites, aluminum fuselage components)
  • Electronics (plastic and metal enclosures)
  • Medical (plastic implants, instruments)

10. How do PCD inserts improve surface finish?

PCD inserts have extremely sharp, wear-resistant edges, which help maintain consistent, mirror-like surface quality, even in abrasive materials like composites and graphite.

Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) standard inserts—available in single-angle and multi-angle profiles—are premium cutting tools designed for high-precision turning, boring, and milling of hardened steels, chilled cast iron, powder-metal alloys, and superalloys. • Single-angle inserts feature one primary cutting angle for consistent chip flow and optimal surface finish in finishing or semi-finishing operations. • Multi-angle inserts incorporate multiple edge geometries (e.g., chamfer + radius) on a single insert, allowing quick changeover between roughing and finishing without tool replacement.
